POKEMON TYPES
So, what are Pokemon? Pokemon, or pocket monsters, are creatures that are capable of many fascinating and strong abilities! They come in a variety of types, and these types dictate the types of techniques, or moves that they are capable of using. Pokemon may have 1 or 2 types, but all moves have 1 type, so a Pokemon's typing determines its use both in battle and from day to day. These types have strengths and weaknesses against each other, and the end result is like rock-paper-scissors if you had 18 choices instead of 3, and could double up on any of them. In other words, it can be complex.
You can find a searchable list of all Pokemon here, but there are currently over 1,000 pokemon to choose from! We recommend using the above linked Bulbapedia as a quick and easy wiki-style format for viewing all Pokemon within a particular point and narrowing it down from there. Please note that all blurbs are simplified in an attempt to make it easier to categorize characters if you're struggling, and none of these are requirements for either the type or your character! So, let's dive in to some of the types that help categorize these creatures.
NORMAL ⟡ strong against NONE; weakness to FIGHTING
Often seen as the jack-of-all-trades, embodying simplicity and adaptability. They are approachable and versatile, making them relatable yet underestimated compared to the other types.

Hardworking and humble, Bug types are often underestimated but incredibly resourceful. They symbolize cooperation, persistence, and the power of community.

DARK ⟡ strong against GHOST, PSYCHIC; weakness to BUG, FAIRY, FIGHTING
An edgy and rebellious aura best describes Dark type Pokemon, as they are both cunning and independent. They're often misunderstood, or blamed for things they didn't do, and feel they are the only ones who can protect themselves.
FAIRY ⟡ strong against DARK, DRAGON, FIGHTING; weakness to POISON, STEEL
The Fairy type enchants with its charm and whimsy, often holding Pokemon that embody kindness and a sort of magical wonder. These types tend to be uplifting and encouraging.
POKEMON MOVES
Pokemon moves are the actual attacks or techniques that Pokemon can perform both in and out of battle. In games, there are generally a lot of technical limits, such as only four moves being available for a Pokemon to learn at any one time. For Bottlecap City, these moves will be a little more loose in terms of rules! Basically:
⟡ You can only use moves that can be learned by the Pokemon you've chosen. TM, HM and egg moves are all allowed! Special moves meant for mechanics in other regions, such as G-Max moves, are not.
⟡ These moves have descriptions, and you should stick to the description of what they can do within reason. However, if you're starting a fire for your camp, or trying to get something out of a tree, or using moves in some applicable way outside of battle, you don't have to get too crazy about making sure the mechanics are translated completely accurately. We give you the freedom to be a little creative, to mold these moves as you see fit, so long as the spirit of their level of power is kept.
⟡ You don't have to keep track of which moves your character has learned and when, but we do ask that you try to have a learning curve over time. Not everything is going to come easily to them right away! We hope that everyone can play with this fairly so we won't have to add any restrictions or monitoring on this.
POKEMON ABILITY
Pokemon have what is called an Ability. For the sake of Bottlecap Bay, this will be largely used as flavor text! We will ask players to choose an ability and list it in the forms given after acceptance for consistency's sake, and it can occasionally be a helpful thing used in a quest. Feel free to play with these as you want! Please also note that Hidden Abilities are more than welcome.
TRANSLATING CANON ABILITIES
If a character with powers is brought into this world, those powers are physically lost, but that doesn't mean that their knowledge has to go to waste. While learning the moves of Pokemon is a challenge, as is adapting to a new body, characters who have previously had powers or skills may have an easier time adapting to moves that are more familiar to what they use in canon. A fire user from home may excel at moves like Ember or Flamethrower. A nurse may find a natural affinity towards healing moves. A firefighter might make a great Hydro Cannon! That sort of flexibility is very much allowed.
If their moves from home are a little more unique, players are welcome to adapt the Pokemon moves stylistically so long as the main effect stays the same. Applying a minor amount of water, but want the shots to be shaped like little fish? Cosmetics are welcome, as are minor shifting of the Pokemon moves to fit what they're used to. Please ask on the FAQ if you're uncertain if something is allowed, but generally, we leave some amount of freedom to our players in this.
In the case of a character being assigned a Pokemon that doesn't align with their canon movesets, don't worry! Even if no move can be learned by their Pokemon form that suits them, activity rewards down the line will allow moves to be purchased and learned despite that.
