Ren is very experienced with plants due to a combination of working at Rafflesia and gardening, and just a general interest. Akechi has some passing interest from reading, but less hands on practice. As for Doc, he's from Nevada. There are mostly no plants in Nevada.

The team might butt heads a little at the start, but having worked together in investigating the hexes, they'd eventually settle into a smoother team dynamic as they go.
