OVERVIEW

WHAT IS BOTTLECAP BAY?

BOTTLECAP BAY is a panfandom roleplay game where characters wake in a strange new world to find their bodies transformed into that of a Pokemon. Characters must struggle to adapt to their new bodies and the powers that come with them, face danger, join guilds, complete quests, explore the world, and uncover the story behind their arrival if they hope to ever return home. This game focuses on expanding on the depth of the Pokemon universe while delving deep into character motivations and development, taking inspiration from the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series to create an avenue for themes such as empathy, love, morality, death, and survival. Players can engage with the plot at their own pace, and game events will adapt based on player and character engagement with both the setting and underlying plot of the game.

WHAT THEMES WILL COME UP?

The game is intended to be a more adult framing of the Pokemon series, so the main genres you can expect from it are exploration, drama, and survival. Themes that are likely to arise from plots and events include empathy, love, morality, death, and survival. Body horror aspects can be explored at each player's desired level, and events will have a wide-range of genres depending on factors such as character actions, plot progression and time of year. Quests, though optional, are a large focus of the game, and will help players guide characters forward in paths of character development one way or another.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER DOESN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING?

Characters will not be forced to participate in quests, but they will be the main source of things like food and supplies, making it key to survival in a new land where resources may be limited. The lack of character help can mean a change in supplies for the city, and not pulling your own weight may get you banished. Ultimately, on an OOC level, if you feel that you would struggle to find reasons for your character to participate in the game setting and elements without being forced at every turn, then it may just mean that the game is not a good fit for either you or your character.

HOW DID THE CHARACTERS GET HERE?

TDMs will serve as arrival events for all new characters, and will vary from cycle to cycle to keep things new and refreshing! While some arrival aspects may be reused or repeated, each TDM will go into detail about how characters in their application cycle arrive, what they face, and the conditions they arrive in. Because of this, TDMs will be considered game canon.

Application acceptances are where the guilds will come into play. After the events of the TDM, characters will be approached, scouted, or otherwise encouraged into joining one of the guilds centered in Bottlecap Bay. These acceptance blurbs will also offer characters some sort of personalized hook in an attempt to help players better jump into the game.

No matter the personalization or method of your character's arrival, though, their last memories of home are eerily similar: a searing pain through their body, throbbing and stabbing like struck nerves, and a sudden loss of all of their senses. Unconsciousness follows, along with the faint whispering of something that can't quite be understood, and the next time they open their eyes, they're in an entirely new body and thrown right into the TDM. Welcome to the world of Pokemon.

IS THERE AN AGE REQUIREMENT?

We ask that players be 18+ to join Bottlecap Bay due to the potential for darker elements and themes within the game.

SETTING

WHERE DOES THIS TAKE PLACE?

All characters will begin in the newly founded city of Bottlecap Bay. As the game progresses, this new port city will develop and grow, and the world around the characters and locals will open up to new exploration. Throughout this, Bottlecap Bay will act as your hub for resources, support, taking on quests, and so on!

IS THERE ANY TECHNOLOGY?

A little! There is a degree of what we would call modern technology, but many of the things that appear to be such are actually courtesy of Pokemon. Lights in the city are powered by Tadbulbs, with some areas using the Tadbulbs themselves as the watchtower-esque lights. The "network" is connected through the pearls produced by Clamperls, its communication pathways upkept through the hard work of a pair of Grumpig brothers. You can expect a few conveniences based on the equivalent of the 1900s or so, but in the style of it being made for Pokemon, by Pokemon.

WHAT'S THE POPULATION LIKE?

There are all sorts of Pokemon here in Bottlecap Bay! At the start of the game, the population of locals is close to 100-200 Pokemon. Most of the Pokemon are here for the same reason: displacement due to humans. Currently, there are no humans on this continent that have been found, but they certainly exist in the world, and many Pokemon don't have the fondest feelings for them. It's a mutual distrust.

They firmly believe, however, that the characters who have arrived as Pokemon are a message from some higher pokebeing, and that they might pave the path towards a more peaceful future. Though public opinion can shift due to actions by incoming characters, it begins as optimistic and hopeful. As the city grows, so will its population, and this population will remember what the characters do or don't do for them.

WHAT’S AVAILABLE TO CHARACTERS UPON ENTRY TO THE GAME?

The locations page will be something that changes and grows as the game progresses. There will be a section at the bottom of Bottlecap Bay's setting information that shows what the city is most in need of, and what the future goals are. There will also be other areas to explore, and as explored, they will be added to the locations page in more detail. Most locations will be landscapes, rather than any settlements, so expect to have to return to Bottlecap Bay for most things.

WHAT IF I HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR A LOCATION?

If you believe the city could benefit from another type of building, feel free to bring it up on the mod contact page to be included as a suggestion in future events or other mod posts. It can certainly be added to the list of future projects. As for player run businesses, they are allowed and welcome, but due to the nature of the ever-growing city setting, will require mod approval. For this reason, we would like to limit player run businesses to those who have the support of at least three other players. There is a form on the locations page for these submissions.

POKEMON & ABILITIES

SO, CHARACTERS TURN INTO POKEMON? WHAT POKEMON DO THEY TURN INTO?

They sure do! We ask that the Pokemon chosen for characters to be transformed into is one that works for them in some manner. This can mean a number of things, so as to keep options open and fun to play with. You can pick something that matches their personality perfectly, or matches their abilities from home! You could also pick something that goes with a color scheme, but may not be the first thing anyone thinks of when viewing them, giving them a bit of a challenge. Essentially, as long as you have an idea in regards to character direction, whether that means expanding on it via development or just reflecting who they are, then it gets a pass!

Alongside the choice of Pokemon in the application, players are expected to write a little blurb about why the choice was made, and the direction in mind for the game. This is to further help guild decisions and arrival personalization! More information is on the application page regarding this. In the rare case that the chosen Pokemon does not feel like a good fit for the game or character in some way, or there are concerns about it, mods may request a revision for the Pokemon to be changed.

SO WHAT POKEMON CAN I CHOOSE FROM?

Nearly anything! Most legendary Pokemon, mythical Pokemon, and Ultra Beasts cannot be chosen at this time, but everything else, including evolved Pokemon and even shiny Pokemon, may be chosen. In the case of legendaries/mythicals/ultra beasts, certain special exceptions like Type: Null may be made, but please come to the mods first to discuss this before TDMing as a Pokemon of this type.

WHAT IF I HAVE NO IDEA? CAN MODS PICK FOR ME?

Players may list up to three Pokemon for mods to choose from if they are indecisive, but they must come up with those choices themselves. We also have a page set up here about Pokemon, their types, abilities, and some generalizations you might want to use for choosing.

DO THE GENDER RESTRICTIONS OF POKEMON APPLY HERE?

Not really! However, if you're going to want to have a female character become Hitmonlee or a male character become Tinkaton, please just add a little note in your application mentioning this, and explaining what you hope this will add in terms of character development or direction. We want to avoid anything that could be seen as harmful or uncomfortable towards any other players within the game, and thus would like to be sure that topics around this are handled with sensitivity. Ultimately, though, gender does not matter when it comes to choosing your Pokemon.

CAN CHARACTERS REGAIN THEIR HUMAN BODIES?

We will have planned, rare events that will allow characters to temporarily return to their human (or at least non-Pokemon) bodies! These events will be used as an occasional way for characters to learn more about one another, bond further, and give them hope that their real body is still waiting—and maybe some relief for those struggling extra hard.

MY CHARACTER IS A VOLTORB NOW! HOW DO THEY DO ANYTHING?

We don't put any restrictions on weird Pokemon choices, but you will have to come up with ways to think around how they might move, use items, solve problems, work, etc. The mods are definitely here to help, but if a Pokemon is on your list, any problems with its form will be assumed to be part of the appeal in playing them. A Voltorb can roll around, rather than walk, and you can certainly have it hop up and down like a bouncy ball as its "jump," for example! Get creative and go wild.

SO HOW DO THE POKEMON ABILITIES WORK?

As soon as characters wake up in their new bodies, they will be capable of new abilities. While we will not be strictly following any sort of rules about movesets, mods will be listing a few example moves upon acceptance explaining what the character will be capable of at their current "level." Again, this is not a literal level in the gameified sense, but just a way to refer to their abilities relative to their entrance to the game in a new body. Over time and through experience, characters will be able to learn more and handle more, and can do anything that their Pokemon can.

WHAT ABOUT THEIR CANON ABILITIES? DO THEY KEEP THEM?

While they do not keep their canon abilities, there are a number of ways players can choose to approach this. Suppose someone has the ability to shoot fire at home, and turns into a fire type Pokemon. They may be a strange natural at their fire type abilities, able to shoot ember and flamethrowers with ease from their mouth or paws or anywhere else. Alternatively, perhaps they knew fire abilities at home, but now they're stuck in a strange ice type Pokemon body. They may struggle harder than usual to acclimate to their ice type abilities, feel extra out of place, and face the struggles that come with that.

Pokemon moves can be used creatively to reflect canon powers from home, but if you feel that there is no Pokemon move that can truly match what your character can do, feel free to reach out to the mods for a discussion, and we can see what we can come up with.

CAN MY CHARACTER EVOLVE?

Yes! Evolution will be possible in game at a later date. A form will be filled out, and evidence of character growth or tension of some kind should be linked in order to qualify for evolution. More information to come later!

IC GAMEPLAY

WHAT IS THE EVENT SCHEDULE?

Major game events are scheduled every other month. For example: if the event months are March, May, July, etc., the TDM and application rounds will fall in between, in February, April, June, and so on. This schedule may change due to the impact or reactions of players on events, and is subject to player feedback. Please check the game calendar for the most current schedule!

CAN CHARACTERS AVOID THE EFFECTS OF AN EVENT?

While participation in every event isn't mandatory, events will serve as the major plot beats that will draw the game forward. Each event will have the potential to shape the environment and the trajectory of the game, meaning that sometimes effects will be unavoidable. However, for players with hard OOC limits on certain aspects, we will provide opt-out scenarios. Generally, there will always be other opportunities available to engage with the plot outside of events, such as quests, which will be detailed further below.

WHAT IF I HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR AN EVENT?

While the main events will be more mod led and planned in advance, we gladly welcome player involvement making use of the setting and lore! Off-months work well for player ideas, so feel free to contact us with your suggestions to see if we can't work them in somewhere. We just ask that you please make sure that your suggestions mesh well with the tone and current events of the game.

WHAT ARE GUILDS?

Guilds are organizations of Pokemon dedicated to helping with the growth and safety of Bottlecap Bay and its residents. Because there is no strict leadership among the Pokemon of Bottlecap Bay, who have come together by circumstance, guilds were created as a fair way for every Pokemon to have their say in the development of the city and the direction of their growth as a whole. Because of that, guilds are very important, and character involvement with the guild they join can change the direction of the game! You can read more on guilds, including which ones are available to join, on the guild page.

WHAT ARE QUESTS?

Quests are a monthly mechanic focused around guild involvement, and are a core component to Bottlecap Bay. Each month, new quests will be posted to the quest board, available for any Pokemon to pick up in designated teams and complete. Quests can range from exploring new regions and reporting back findings, rescuing other Pokemon, supply requests, or many other tasks handed out by the people of the city. Please read the questboard page for more information!

HOW DOES HOUSING WORK?

Characters will be provided with housing based on the guild they are invited to join. Each guild has its own style of housing, and along with it, its own levels of privacy or comfort based on guild ranking. This information will be linked in your acceptance notice. You are welcome to read more on the guild bases either on the guilds page or the locations page.

CAN I REQUEST NPC INTERACTION?

Where needed, mods will offer the ability to thread with an NPC to dispense information or drive plot points in certain TDMs or events. We don't currently accept requests for IC threads otherwise. However, if a character would like to interact with an NPC in a plot capacity, please each out on the mod contact page. A mod will reply with a short NPC blurb for you.

IS THERE A NETWORK?

Yes! As mentioned briefly in the technology question, characters are given pearls produced by Clamperls that are then set up to connect to the "network" via the Grumpig brothers and their psychic abilities. These are called Grumpearls.

When you sign up with a guild, you will receive your Grumpearl and be connected automatically. It works as a psychic communication, allowing you to beam your thoughts, images, or a live feed of what you see into the pearl and transmit it across to other pearls! Sometimes it can be tricky to get used to using someone else's psychic abilities, so misfires are pretty common.

Only fellow psychic Pokemon seem to be able to form truly private network connections, as the Grumpigs are relaying your messages and it is possible for other psychic Pokemon to learn how to intercept. (But inbox threads can be assumed to be private unless you don't want them to be - the Grumpigs aren't paying attention to the contents of all messages!)

ARE THERE ANY LANGUAGE OR COMMUNICATION BARRIERS?

No. All Pokemon, and characters who arrive as Pokemon, speak the same language of Pokemon. When humans come into the plot, there may be some language differences that will be approached and mentioned at that point in time.

IS THERE CURRENCY? CAN MY CHARACTER EARN MONEY?

Pokemon do not work in currency, but instead make use of trades, labor, and favors. For this reason, reputation is a huge thing; someone with a higher reputation in their guild may be trusted more by the locals, and given things like clothing, food, or other supplies at a cheaper rate of exchange due to the services they've already provided.

WHAT HAPPENS IF CHARACTERS DIE?

Death is permanent in Bottlecap Bay, but Pokemon have rather resilient bodies and can bounce back from extreme injuries fairly well. Near death experiences can occur, but in the case of an actual death, please contact the mods to determine how to handle it, but assume that your character will be dropped from the game and you will not be able to reapp them. Others may apply for a character that has previously died, but this will require special lore reasoning, so please feel free to contact mods before posting on a TDM if you'd like to apply for a character that has been previously killed off.

Fainting, however, is far more likely. When a Pokemon faints, it is up to their teammates or fellow Pokemon to get them somewhere to administer treatment. If an entire team wipes out on a quest, another team may receive an "emergency quest" to rescue them from danger. This can be threaded out or handwaved as extra CR opportunities.

IS SMUT ALLOWED?

As this is a game with adult themes and the interactions and bonding between characters may lead to intimacy or feelings, smut is allowed. However, there are some guidelines we'd like to keep in place regarding this.

Any smut posted on the community must be marked with proper warnings and labels, and the post locked to the community. We ask that hard kinks or other content that people may find objectionable in an open space, such as smut involving underage characters, siblings, or similar, be kept off of the communities entirely. If a thread would include these subjects, you are welcome to move it to your own journal's inbox, still the with proper warnings and labels.

We will not be moderating content that occurs in your own journals, so long as all player boundaries are communicated and respected. We will also not be creating any mechanics to facilitate smut or writing any prompts for smut in any TDM or event posts, but players are welcome to have their characters experience whatever themes they'd like to explore in their own journals. The main priority here is the ability for all players to be comfortable and enjoy themselves while also not making the environment difficult for others to play in.

If you have a concern regarding the handling of NSFW content in game, please contact the mods on the mod contact page.

OOC GAMEPLAY

IS THERE A GAME CAP?

At this time, there is no game cap. However, this may change in future rounds to account for mod workload and the ability to create a fun environment for all players.

CAN MY CHARACTER SWITCH POKEMON AFTER ACCEPTANCE?

We will not be allowing Pokemon species changes, so please think carefully when choosing your Pokemon.

DO I GET TO PICK WHICH GUILD MY CHARACTER JOINS?

Currently, the application allows one opt-out if you would like to rule out one of the three guilds for not seeming interesting enough for you to play in. However, the end decision will be mod based, and will be focused largely off the suitability section and response to the questionnaire. This will also be related to your personalized acceptance note!

CAN MY CHARACTER SWITCH GUILDS?

Swapping guilds is a very involved process that alters the trust and reputation rank of your character. The exception to this would be as new guilds potentially open themselves in the future. The latter would be considered a free-swap event, where characters may sign up to switch guilds with little to no repercussions. To swap a guild outside of one of these events, we are planning to have an activity reward centered around this. Until then, assume that your character will not be trusted enough to be welcomed into another guild at their current reputation level.

To put it simply: technically yes, but there is no current system in place for it outside of special events at this time and it would require your character to be in their guild for a while first, so stay tuned!

WHAT TIMEZONE IS THE GAME RUN ON?

The game's official timezone is EST.

WHAT IS THE TIME RATIO OF THE GAME?

The game operates with 1 IC day being equal to 1 OOC day, for a 1:1 calendar.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER HAS SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SURVIVAL?

If you would like to keep these, despite the character having a new body, you are free to translate them into some type of Pokemon equivalent. However, considering it is an entirely new body, Pokemon may not have the same problems as other species, and you can also consider this need dropped.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER HAS TWO PERSONALITIES/IS TWO PEOPLE IN ONE?

We'll take this on a case by case basis, but in general this is fine. You can look into Pokemon that have multiple bodies in one form, or just shove them into one body again.

CAN MY CHARACTER BRING THEIR PET OR SUMMON?

This will be evaluated on a case by case basis, but in general, no they won't be allowed. Exceptions may be given if the pet or summon has some higher importance or connection to the character, and/or if the player has a Pokemon form in mind that would account for the summon/pet as part of it.

WHAT ARE THE ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS?

Each month, we require 5 comments from your character across no more than 2 threads. TDM and inbox threads do count for activity requirements. Top levels also count for one comment, but only once.

Examples of valid submissions:
⟡ One log thread with 5 comments.
⟡ One log thread with 3 comments, and one log thread with 3 comments.
⟡ One network thread with 4 comments, and one log thread with 2 comments.
⟡ One log toplevel with 2 comments in reply to one character and 3 comments in reply to a second character. Top level by itself, with no responses, does not count as a comment.

All comments must be made in the month of the activity check in order to count, and each thread may only be used for activity once even if it continues to be tagged after the month it was used for. A thread that was started in one month and has comments continuing into the next month (i.e. a thread started in February and continued into March) may use those March comments for March AC as long as the thread was not used for a prior AC.

AC closes on the last day of each month at 11:59 PM EST, but activity can be submitted anytime during the month prior to that.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER ACTIVITY CONSIDERATIONS?

Activity requirements may shift with the size and involvement of the game, as well as to account for any future caps or restrictions on applications. At this time, there are no additional considerations, but this may change in the future. Any changes will be thoroughly communicated in mod posts, plurks, and the AC entry itself if they occur.

WHAT IF I FORGET TO POST AC, OR DON'T HAVE ENOUGH OF IT?

Bottlecap Bay does not have a strike system or post warning lists for AC. Characters who have not submitted AC by the deadline will be swept, even if they have sufficient activity otherwise. Players who have a character swept will be removed from the game and unable to apply again until one full app round has passed since their sweep, so please contact the mods ahead of time if you are unable to submit AC before the end of the month for any reason.

WHAT IF I'M TOO BUSY AND UNABLE TO RP?

Players may choose to take a hiatus at any time. However, a player is only allowed to hiatus once every quarter — three (3) months. Exemption from AC will be granted for the month the player is hiatused in regardless of length. Please post a check-in under your AC comment while hiatused, if you are able to do so before the end of the month. You can read more about the hiatus rules here.

On an IC level, characters that are on hiatus can either be on autopilot or kept in a hospital bed for care from quest-related injury or illness.

ARE THERE ANY REWARDS FOR EXTRA ACTIVITY?

There will be the unveiling of activity rewards in the near future! The details of this mechanic are still being smoothed out, so this will be in a future update.

WHAT HAPPENS TO DROPPED CHARACTERS?

They fall mysteriously ill and into a coma. Dropped characters are kept in an isolated ward of the hospital in Bottlecap Bay, and visiting is limited due to the unknown nature of the illness in question.

APPLICATIONS

WHAT CHARACTERS ARE APPABLE?

Canon characters, canon AU characters, and original characters from an original or open-world world setting such as MMOs or tabletop RPGs are allowed. Fanmade AUs, fandom OCs, and CRAUs may not be apped. Fictionalized versions of historical figures are allowed, but playing directly from history or biographical adaptations is not.

Canons do not have to be officially translated in order to be appable, but there must be some sort of English language translation available for reference. There are no restrictions on character ages, but keep in mind that suitability is evaluated as part of the application, and younger characters may be denied if they would not fit well with the game's setting.

Currently, doubles of characters are not allowed, including those coming from canon AUs. For canon variants and malleable protagonists we are only allowing one (1) per cast, so one Warrior of Light, one Inquisitor, etc.

ARE THERE CAST OR CHARACTER CAPS? HOW MANY CHARACTERS CAN I APP?

As of the first application round, there will be no cast caps in place. Afterwards, the cast list will be reviewed and a decision may be made in the future to implement a cast cap depending on the size of the game and its casts.

Players currently may have up to two (2) characters in game, but may only app one (1) character at a time.

ARE THERE RESERVES OR APP CHALLENGES?

Neither reserve or app challenges are accepted at this time, and multiple applications for the same non-reserved character will be evaluated on a first come, first served basis.

WHEN DO RESERVES AND APPS OPEN? WHEN ARE TEST DRIVES POSTED?

Please check the calendar page for the most up to date information on current application cycles, including TDM dates. As of March 10th, 2025, Bottlecap Bay is moving to permanently open reserves and applications. Reserves will last for one week, and applications will be collected and processed on a bi-monthly basis, as listed on the calendar page.

ARE PROXY RESERVES ALLOWED?

Yes, so long as the actual player confirms within 24 hours of the proxy posting.

ARE THERE ANY TIME RESTRICTIONS ON CANON RELEASES BEFORE THEY CAN BE APPED?

Two weeks is the preferred amount of time after a new canon release. Please make sure there are English language translations available for mods to reference if needed.

CAN I APP TWO CHARACTERS FROM THE SAME CANON?

Players may not apply for two characters from the same canon at this time.

CAN I APP A CHARACTER WHO DIED IN CANON?

Yes. You may choose to apply for characters who have died in canon before or after their point of death.

WHAT CAN MY CHARACTER BRING INTO THE GAME?

Characters will not be able to bring anything into the game, as they will be completely transformed. They will be provided with some items upon acceptance, and this will be notated in the acceptance notice.

CAN WE APP A CHARACTER WITH LITTLE BACKGROUND INFORMATION?

The main thing we are looking for in an application is that it shows a consistent character, which is why we allow bullet points for background. The background section is also one of our last considerations, as far as the application goes, so if you feel confident you'd be able to answer the questionnaire thoroughly then we would consider the character viable.

Heyo, I've seen this game floating around and have been thinking of apping, just wanted to check something to help with decision making.

Ranma has a curse in canon where he changes gender when doused with water (cold for girl, hot to change him back to boy). Would this count as a power that gets removed or no? Asking since different games have had different takes on whether the curse counts for one or not, so I wanted to check here beforehand. It's not a deal breaker to me whether he keeps it or is rid of it for the game either way. Thanks for your answer in advance!

After a bit of discussion, the mod verdict is that it's fine for Ranma to keep this "curse" - we encourage having fun with it by picking a Pokemon that has visibly different gendered forms!

Helloooo I have another question!

Since dropped characters are canonically comatose until they get re-apped, is it okay for them to be on the TDM? I ask because I've never put a dropped character on a TDM period and I wasn't sure if it's allowed in general / if the way BCB handles dropped characters would affect things.
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-09-08 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Dropped characters are allowed on the TDM, and characters who were previously in the game would indeed start off in the clinic! It's up to players whether their character wakes up woozily and wanders over to TDM locations at their own pace, or outright sleepwalks and wakes to find themselves already there. (Somehow, they manage to avoid the clinic's staff...)

In canon, Cassie has a number of morphs/forms to take: wolf, osprey, squirrel etc, which only become available to her after touching the animals in question.

Ditto apparently can be any creature or inanimate object including people, but can get things wrong if they transform from memory rather than copying what's in front of them. If Cassie's a Ditto, I'm assuming she can't manage human (but can try to great body horror effect before reverting back to blob). Can she turn into the Pokemon most similar to those animal morphs (Lycanroc, Staravia, Skwovet etc) from start, or would she have to meet examples of those species first? Are there other restrictions to keep in mind for Transform?
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-09-14 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
You're correct that Cassie wouldn't be able to morph into a human! Shapeshifting Pokemon might initially think that they're able to work up to their previous forms with enough effort, but would eventually discover that it's impossible and painful (as opposed to illusion Pokemon, which could make a convincing illusion, but would never be able to physically take on that form).

Cassie wouldn't be able to immediately morph into Pokemon similar to those animal morphs, she would have to meet examples of those species first. (You are, however, welcome to say that this happened offscreen and with NPCs, as long as it stays within reason! No need to meet player characters with those species.)

As for other restrictions: in general, customizing forms beyond the "normal" appearance/color of a Pokemon species is off the table, as this is an AC reward, and we feel it would be unfair to other players! However, it's fine for Cassie to fail to fully morph - i.e. still have goopy Ditto-like portions of her body, etc. Please do feel free to play up the body horror!

What would happen if a Cheri Berry tried to modify their low tier dwelling to have a roof? Would Ribombee be upset?

I feel like Guilmon would be very likely to try this because water is so hazardous to him.
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-09-17 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Provided the resources used to modify the dwelling were gathered personally and constructed on their own time, Ribombee would have no problem with it at all. In fact, he would likely congratulate their initiative and work ethic.

Weird question, but I saw something on EMP that got me genuinely curious. Would characters from well known fan creations like Abridged Series, Undertale Yellow, 8-bit Theater, and the like qualify as fandom AUs and thus not be applicable, or would their role as larger scale projects with a large following permit them as being considered a separate canon?

I ask because some games in the past have permitted things like DBZ Abridged characters, but others are pickier.

(I am guessing canons like these probably are a no go, but just wanna be safe since they're a weird case.)
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-09-17 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, you are correct in assuming such characters would be considered to be from fanmade AUs. As such, you would not be able to app them to the game.

I can probably guess what the answer to this is, but you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, right? What are the rulings on the special Eevee moves from Let's Go Eevee? I understand the answer is probably no but I have reason to think that it'd be perfect for Hibiki.

No, these moves would be fine! We aren't overly concerned about how powerful a move is in terms of direct, quantified game mechanics, as we expect and encourage players to interpret Pokemon abilities with an eye towards creativity rather than mechanical power. (To be more specific, we do expect players to stick to the spirits of moves, for example, Ember is clearly not going to generate as large a flame as Fire Blast based on the game descriptions. However we aren't worried about Ember having 40 power and Fire Blast having 110, or Sizzly Slide having 90 power and a guaranteed burn.)

If any player did start trying to take advantage of this, it would be an issue of rp etiquette rather than one specific move, and would be handled that way.

Heya mods!

I had only been sort of treating "Abilities" as a fluff thing in-game, but since the custom permissions code lists them, I figure I should treat them as official, so:

Are there any limitations on which ability one chooses? Are hidden abilities legal off the bat, or would they require a purchase?

EDIT: Disregard, found the answer on a different page. IGNOOOORE MEEEE~

Hi Mods :'D

I was wondering, if a player were to sleep with their grumpearl by accident either holding it or being under their pillow, would a dream share happen?
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-10-08 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Under normal circumstances, Grumpearls require being conscious and awake to use (though it is possible to mess up and send messages to the wrong person, or to send something that you didn't intend but are thinking about). The Grumpigs are the ones disseminating messages sent over the pearls, and though they're not always paying attention to the contents, they are able to tell when someone's awake or asleep.

However, as long as you're okay with it, we may borrow this idea for a future event!

If pressed on the matter, how would Ribombee react to being questioned about the special treatment Agnes and Tenna are getting? I don't see Guilmon being especially aggressive, but I do think he'd be a bit disheartened, especially when his fire tail's so vulnerable to the elements, and he's had to try managing his own living space to accommodate.
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-10-08 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as Agnes, and some other new Cheri members that got more assistance with their housing situation: Ribombee will be apologetic! He'll explain it as not previously having a lot of guild members that needed this kind of support, and that he was made more aware of the need for it by seeing Guilmon's own attempts at managing, as well as being talked to by several people (such as Mightyena). (He also didn't have a lot of opportunity to prepare for Guilmon, who suddenly transformed from a Fuecoco to a much more vulnerable Charmeleon!)

He's trying to do better about it with new members, but Guilmon seems to be handling it fine by now without the extra support so he hasn't intervened - and for what it's worth, Ribombee does seem to be pleased by Guilmon's resourcefulness!

Somehow, though, Ribombee either doesn't address anything about Tenna, or acts confused, as if there's nothing special going on there...

Okay so two interconnected questions for you!

1) how easily accessible are materials like metal (even if it's just scraps, Parvati can work with that as a Tinkaton)
2) if it's hard, since Corviknight bones seem to have a metal-like quality to them would they be considered a reasonable substitute and not also a reason to sate a tinkaton's innate bloodlust for the birds what are you talking about

Thank you in advance!

If someone gets familiar enough with the night sky, is it possible to navigate by the stars in Bopbay? Or do the stars shift around like landmarks in the forest/some other locations?

(Relatedly, even if someone can navigate by the stars, would that help in those navigationally confused places?)
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-10-14 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Under normal circumstances, it is possible to learn the stars and navigate by them - the night sky is consistent between Bottlecap Bay and Crowncork Valley, as well as current expedition locations that are navigationally straightforward.

In jumbled-up places like parts of the forest, however, they don't always look the way they should. New stars might show up, or familiar ones might be missing, or stars might shift places from one hour to the next. They'll never move while someone's looking, but if someone glances away, or even blinks, the sky may end up looking different.

I have a few questions that may not really bear asking, but I'm curious anyway, and didn't see anywhere else.

1. Suppose a character insisted on doing a quest on their own, would a guild leader allow that if they insisted hard enough that they were more than capable of doing the work themselves? Kaiba's kind of a lone wolf so he would be that kind of guy to ask for something abnormal.

2. Should the answer to the above be yes, ICly, is it ok to set up a quest where some nimrod tries to solo something difficult, but ends up getting assisted by whoever OOCly is signed up for the quest with them? (i.e., I and 2 other people submit our characters for a quest, but Kaiba actually only volunteered by himself, and then the other 2 assist afterwards when he's in trouble.)
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-10-19 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
In character, for any official quests on the questboard, characters are required by the guilds to have at least one partner for their safety. This is true even for simple gathering quests, just in case something comes up in the wilderness. While there's the rare quest that truly has no danger involved, it's just easier to have it as a rule across the board! (Also good for team-building and town cohesion!)

If a character signs up for a quest without listing a partner, it's assumed that they don't care who they're paired with, and they will be assigned someone - perhaps whichever guild leader is handling the board that day will have someone specific in mind, or perhaps it'll be a "there's only one other person who signed up solo" situation, or anything in between.

(Of course, ICly there's also nothing stopping someone from charging off ahead, leaving behind any teammates, and trying to do it solo anyway. And then having to be rescued. At least, nothing stopping them besides the danger, their guild leader's disapproval, and so on...)

OOCly, you are free to use this as an excuse to pair up characters that would otherwise never go on a quest together!

As the seasons change in Bottlecap Bay and Skull Town, is there any sign of that affecting Heavy Downmoor, Furnace Mountain and Icefall Lake in particular?

Like, is the fact that those three areas have their own unique climates so close together as Fucking Weird as it seems, and are they aseasonal monoliths of their own individual elemental themes?
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-10-19 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Unique climates so close together are not completely unfamiliar to the native Pokemon! This just seems to be a fact of life in the Pokemon world...

However, the regions aren't entirely aseasonal monoliths, and are affected by the seasons to some degree. It's hard to notice any drop in temperature at Furnace Mountain (considering all the lava), but as Bottlecap Bay inches into winter the Heavy Downmoor will intermittently start experiencing snowfall rather than rain (there won't be outright blizzards, but watch out for snow thunderstorms). Icefall Lake, too, is definitely getting even colder; even in fall, characters may overhear (or participate in) discussion about doing as much as possible with the crevasses and underwater ruins, before the lake is impossible to get through.

With the understanding that you would not be able to apply with the character, as well as the fact that other players may choose not to treat such threads as canon instances, you are allowed to enjoy yourself on the TDM with such characters!

We reserve the right to reconsider this policy if we see this being abused to skirt past our rules (for example, returning to TDMs for an extended period as a substitute for playing in the game), but we're trusting players to rp responsibly!

bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
In theory, characters are required to stay in the guild housing associated with their guild - or in the communal housing if they're staying at Skull Town! In practice, characters can sleep elsewhere if they're willing to risk disapproval (and perhaps brave the elements)... but obtaining their own housing in town is not currently possible. There isn't any extra housing to spare!

Oh boy oh boy I am looking at making my boy a Ralts and I have questions-

-Ralts naturally learns Teleport. I assume it's possible for him to practice with the move to get better at it/teleport further distances? How far could he reasonably teleport in one shot? Would attempting multiple teleports in a row require rest afterwards?

-It's stated that Ralts senses other Pokémon's emotions. Obviously this feels like an opt in thing with other PCs (no god modding and all that), but is it okay for him to sense the emotions of NPCs?

-This is more about Kirlia, but some in game dex entries state that Kirlia can create 'rips in the dimensions' and see into the future. I feel like he shouldn't be able to literally create interdimensional rips if he manages to evolve into Kirlia (holy mother of game breaking), but I thought I'd confirm.

(Sorry if this is a lot, I'm just excited-)
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-14 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Yes, this is fine. As a very long term goal, Pokemon with Teleport would be able to teleport themselves or others much longer distances (for example, there are Pokemon teleporting others in the current TDM log), but would start off being able to do only short distances. (Think the length of a room, then after a few months the length of a city block, and so on.)

Long teleports or multiple teleports would both be exhausting, but stamina could be built to a point with practice. Given the same distance, a single long teleport is less tiring than chaining many little ones.

2. Yes, this is fine. Be sure to create an Opt-In for other players to make use of!

3. You're fine to play with this for flavor, if you'd like, as Bottlecap Bay's setting already has time- and space-related inconsistencies going on! Kirlia could create small rips to try to see into the near future... but they would be no more accurate/reliable than the hallucinations and time fractures the Middle Forest induces. Did you avoid that future because you were warned by your dimensional rip, or because it was never going to happen in the first place? Does what you're seeing match up with what's actually in front of you at all?

We hope these answers have helped!

Let's say a group of characters decided to go back up to the Heavy Downmoor mountain shrine on their own time, without a quest.

1. Is there any reason this wouldn't be doable?
2. Would they be able to discover anything new, particularly if one of said group is Ingo, who is familiar with Origin Palkia/Dialga? I'm assuming the statue would still be exhibiting the same behavior of changing shapes/looking different to everyone.

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-16 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
1. It's entirely possible to go back to Heavy Downmoor on one's own time, albeit ill advised - particularly in winter, given the increasingly frigid conditions making terrain more slippery than typical. As there's no guild presence expecting them back like there would be for a quest, Pokemon put themselves at great risk doing so.

2. The statue will continue to change and look different to everyone viewing it - including looking different to before for anyone who's a repeat visitor. Ingo may find some of the statue's features more familiar than others at times, but there's nothing else of note!

Currently weighing a few different options for the January(/whenever I have spoons and time again) TDM.

Would a Neopet fall under the "original characters from an original or open-world world setting"? I don't see why they wouldn't, since their participation in on-site events would be analogous to an MMO character, but if there's some distinction I'm not thinking of I wanted to make sure I didn't fall too far down the rabbit hole of brainstorming and get disappointed.

If the answer would normally be no, would it change the math if the Neopet had been featured in something like the Neopian Times, which is user-submitted content but selected and approved by site staff?
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-14 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
A Neopet does indeed fall into the category of 'Original character from an Open-world setting', being that Neopets may be considered 'player characters' in an MMO of a sort.

Hi mods, greatly enjoyed myself reading up on the game and setting!

My character is a budding manga artist, and if I apped with her I'm keen to explore what mediums she could use to continue her art practice in Bottlecap Bay. Are most of the records in the Lum Berry Guild library on stone tablets, apart from maps? OOCly, I'm wondering if there are specific pokemon that produce these books, or if any pokemon can produce a tablet as long as they have the write tools. (leaving that typo in there lol)

Do the pokemon use leaves or paper as writing material? Is ink something pokemon have learned how to make (out of flowers, perhaps) or can it be obtainable / bought from pokemon like Tentacools ?

Do most Pokemon have access to writing tools like paper and ink, and it's more of a deliberate feature of the Library to store records as stone tablets?

Thank you!
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-14 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
While the permanent records of the Archives are made using stone, this is largely so that Pokemon who could otherwise burn such documents do not make such fatal mistakes with the records held within. Paper is in fact in common use across Bottlecap Bay, seen in things such as letters, and more recognizably, Questboard postings.

With this in mind, acquiring paper and ink would be as simple as requesting it of particular Guild Leaders, or bartering for such with one of the local shops.

(It's not recommended to use untreated leaves, as ink won't quite stick to those properly! But perhaps someone will teach papermaking later...)

Because Akechi is a philosophy nerd, what sort of information would he find in the Archives regarding the nature between predator and prey in this world and the ethics of hunting? Anything about laws related to it?

He already got the perspectives of other off-world characters, but he has a morbid fascination and craves knowledge...
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-14 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Akechi will find that the nature of predator and prey is so very baked into the basis of the world that the very idea of ethics and law around the matter draw a blank stare from most Pokemon questioned about it. The opinions seem to very much be of the confused 'why are you making such a fuss about this?' vein.

The Archives in turn hold next to nothing about it - and what he does find doesn't include any sort of legislature. The truce in town is informal and explicitly for the practical purpose of being able to live and work together. (Though it being informal doesn't mean characters wouldn't experience serious consequences for breaking it! It's more that Bottlecap Bay doesn't seem to have formally written down laws at all.)

Akechi can find a passing reference to an annual feast where 'not a single Pokemon hunts'. Beyond this, he's looking into a topic that's considered so known and normal that no one's bothered to write more down. Alas...

OOCly, while we appreciate the excitement, we would like to note that Pokemon canon typically does not dive deeper into predation, despite it being referred to in many Pokedex entries and games. For that reason, as mods we are deliberately avoiding going further into this topic, and leaving the diet an individual Pokemon must eat up to the character's player. We're happy for players to take this and run with it for smaller-scale interpersonal conflicts, but it's not intended to be and will never be a focus of the game!

Sorry if I missed anything about this somewhere, but... Berries.

Are the local Pokémon versed in Berries that can provide things like healing HP/status conditions or boosts in battle? Are all berries available, or do we only have a selection to choose from?
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-18 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Local Pokemon are generally aware of the effect of Berries, though this gets shakier with the rarer ones, with fewer Pokemon aware of what they do (those working in the clinic, for example, or particularly knowledgeable guild NPCs).

Berries are often available as quest rewards but are also broadly available in the wild - we basically just ask players keep it within reason, particularly with the rarer berries. A character probably doesn't have a pile of Lum Berries in their room, and something like an Enigma Berry would be nearly impossible to find normally! Something like a Rawst or Oran Berry would be more plentiful - in fact, the clinic has cultivated potted plants for their own use.

In addition, berries do follow the seasons. Now that Bottlecap Bay is entering winter, berries in the wild are much harder to find... while in summer berries are plentiful!

If Akechi were to snoop around about evolution, is there anything he'd learn regarding it? E.g. if native Pokémon are also suffering from stunted evolution, etc. It's been on his mind for a while and he is very nosy.

He'd most likely inquire at the clinic and the Archives first.
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-11-24 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's unclear if the native Pokemon are suffering from stunted evolution - the ones in the guilds that battled regularly enough to experience it evolved a long time ago! There are a handful of native Pokemon (both native to the area and just to the world) that have come in to the clinic with concerns about evolution this year, and nobody in town has evolved since the player characters started arriving. But it's hard to say if they actually should have, or if they're being overly anxious about it because of hearing about stunted evolution. None of them have as much experience as the player characters have gained over the past year.

At the very least, it's safe to say that if it is a problem for the native Pokemon as well... it's a recent problem! "Wild" Pokemon can be found in evolved forms, and plenty of Bottlecap Bay residents talk about their past experiences with evolution.

If a character dug through the Archives, could they find anything useful regarding passive moves that affect the battlefield (e.g. Trick Room, Sunny Day, Rain Dance)?

Also, what sort of customs would be archived? Thinking things like holidays, spirituality, etc in the region. This nerd is super fascinated by these things, as well as longstanding traditions.
bayhelpers: (Default)

[personal profile] bayhelpers 2025-12-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
1: They could, but inconsistently; much like records about Pokemon in general, the Bay only has records that Pokemon have actively submitted to the Archives, so rarer moves are less likely to be present. And in general it's still better to consult actual Pokemon around town about their moves - they may have not thought to submit information, either because they believe it's widely known, or because they think of their experience as just them playing around, not something worthy of writing down. (To Polteageist's eternal frustration.)

2: References to holidays (like the mention Akechi found before about Longest Night) can be found! The same is true of references to some Legendary Pokemon - though it's hard to tell what's just myth and what's actually accurate with the latter, and most descriptions don't have names. Some are even contradictory. With the former, one concrete thing that Akechi can find is that the only yearly Pokemon traditions in this area are Longest Night, Starfall, the commemoration of the first arrival to Bottlecap Bay, and the basket exchanges of harvest goods in late fall. Other traditions seem to happen every couple or few years, or have even longer periods in between.

OOCly, for practical purposes, we aren't going to be listing off additional holidays right now! Players will have to wait for events.

ICly, if other holidays come up, you may handwave that investigative characters are already passingly familiar due to the Archives. (Unless otherwise stated in the event description.) Or maybe not, maybe they never happened to read about a specific one!
